    Turning Point

The Accidental Recreational Music Therapist!

I have a huge soft spot for working in the community. Performance is incredibly egotistical as on the stage “there is no room for shrinking violets” and to balance the emotional books I have found working in the community to be incredibly rewarding.

From the first steps on my journey to become a professional singer I have always tried to inspire and empower others with their own singing voices. From mother and baby singing groups, running singing classes in my children’s primary school, running ‘Karaoke for Kids’ groups, private tuition  for special needs teenagers to facilitating singing and cupcake making workshops for young adults with learning disabilities - I have done it all with nothing but my instincts and a deep love of singing, music and people!  A turning point for me was my association with the aptly named facility Turning Point Trust in Tauranga, New Zealand, a mental health and addiction service provider. Over 5 years I ran very successful singing classes and found this to be immensely satisfying work, highlighting to me again the power of singing and the voice being heard for our mental well-being.

I am often asked to perform for our senior generation and again I find this work rich with rewards. As a specialist in vintage songs, what might be a new song to me will be a much loved and revered tune from the past evoking many memories.  Early on in my career I was told by a very wise musician that she shared her talents with the elderly because one day she may also enjoy someone such as herself if her life should lead her to a retirement home in her grand old age! Which also led me on to her  bugbear……due to many residential homes having such tight budgets often their poor residents are inflicted with equally poor entertainment which does more harm to their mental well-being than good! In my small way I intend to rectify this problem by offering affordable concerts packed with fun, variety and gorgeous costumes, with the added bonus of sharing a cuppa and spending time to chat after the concerts. This is a chance to make a difference and change their environment for an afternoon; it may be a splash in the pond but the ripples can be felt for much, much longer.

So it seems I have become an accidental recreational music therapist, meaning that I am unqualified in an educational sense but due to my life experiences I am more than qualified in a practical sense! I endeavour to be a ray of sunshine with song and music to share and inspire and if you ask me nicely  I will even bring along some baking!

“Thank you so much for a really superb afternoon on Wednesday. Those there all said how much they enjoyed it. One of the best afternoons at Church Bailey”

"Just wanted to say a big thank-you to Sharon who helped to entertain all the residents at our nursing home for their Christmas party, a very good time was had by all. I cannot recommend her enough."

"Thank you for attending the audition. Your performance was very much enjoyed by all present. The audience thought your presentation and singing were excellent, the choice of songs carefully thought out. The anecdotes about the songs and singers was interesting and it was appreciated that you performed in costume. I wish you every success with bookings from our WI's."
